Hands and Voices
Hands and Voices is a fully inclusive singing and signing community choir with community spirit at its heart that inspires disabled people to communicate through creativity.
It is one of the first singing and signing choirs in the UK, set up as a means of enabling people with learning and communication difficulties to take part in music and express themselves creatively, Hands and Voices has won national and international acclaim for creating an innovative approach to making music more accessible.
Hands and Voices is an inclusive choir, welcoming all members of the community whether they have a disability or not, led by a vision where everyone is equally valued, celebrated, challenged and where people can grow musically and socially.
It’s to do with involvement and sincerity – that’s what you get when you see Hands and Voices perform and that’s what is important in art, it really is. The first time I saw the choir perform I was absolutely spellbound by their enthusiasm and life. As somebody who’s involved with performance to see such spontaneity was absolutely fantastic. Alan Hacker, OBE, AAM Patron (1992-2012)
The choir performs a diverse repertoire of inspiring and fun songs, many of which are written by the choir’s very talented members.
The driving force behind the choir are the members themselves. A committee of members takes on much of the day to day running of the choir and requested the setting up of our Apprentice Training Programme, one of the first initiatives in the UK to train disabled musicians as workshop leaders.
I love singing and signing, it’s excellent fun and I really enjoy helping everyone. I especially liked learning one of our songs in German to teach at a workshop. Hands and Voices member
