Our Fundraising Heroes : JNJS Classic Soul

This week, Community Fundraising Coordinator Lauren chats to John Steel from JNJS Classic Soul who’ve raised an incredible £2,000 for AAM over the past few years.

John and the rest of the JNJS Classic Soul crew first came across AAM when Hands & Voices performed at A Night to Remember back in 2017. They’ve been big H&V fans ever since, coming along to our gigs and joining in with our audience singalongs.

So tell us, who are JNJS Classic Soul and what do you do as a group?

We’re JNJS Classic Soul, and we’re a group of four guys who like to play soul music together and raise money at the same time.

You host a number of events for different York causes every year. How long have you been raising money for charities?

We’ve been going for 13 years!

Over that time, how much would you say you’ve raised?

We’ve raised over £20,000 for a number of small charities in and around York. Each year we’ll raise money for five small York-based charities and over 13 years, it all adds up!

So, how do you turn your love of soul music into donations for the causes you care about?

We charge £5 to get in, with all the money going straight to the chosen charity for that event. To help cover room hire costs for the year, we host one event at the start of the year where all the proceeds go into a pot.

This means for the remaining five events anything raised will be going straight to charity. We also hold raffles to help raise even more money.

We’re so grateful for your support and everything you’ve done for AAM - We think you’re all ace! Where can people find you and when’s your next event?

Our next event will be at the Hospital Social Club on Saturday 15th July, so come find us there. We’re on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JnjSoul and we’ll be raising money for Accessible Arts & Media on Saturday 11th November.

Want to become our next fundraising hero? Get in touch and tell us about your ideas – we’d love to hear them!
