Be part of our 2024 Dragon Boat Challenge Team!
We want to take part in the 2024 York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge and need a team of rowers to help make that happen. Can you help?
Our Sea’s the Day team absolutely smashed it back in 2022 and had a fab time making a splash out on the water. We’d love to do it all over again and would like to hear from anyone who’s looking to set themselves a challenge and get involved.
Tell me about the race
A Dragon Boat Race is where a team of rowers race against other teams to steer their long dragon-shaped boats over the finish line. Each team has 16 rowers and a drummer who helps the rowers keep to the same rhythm. And best of all, each team gets to dress up in a silly-themed costume to help them stand out on the water.
It’s a really fun event to be part of, and the energy of all the teams who gather on the South Bank really makes it.
The race will be held on Sunday 14th July on the river Ouse in York, and with any luck, we’ll have glorious sunshine on the day. It’ll run all day from 10am – 4pm, until all the teams have raced one another, and a winning team has been crowned.
On the opposite side of the river, North Bank Gala is brimming with fundraising stalls, local businesses and the best cheering crowd to spur the teams on.
York Rotary Club have been running the event for over 20 years, raising a staggering £1.4 million, making it the biggest fundraising event in York. Every year, they choose two main causes for the event and next year’s main charities will be York Rotary Charity Fund and York Samaritans.
This means that one third of the money we raise will be split between these charities, with the remaining two thirds coming directly to AAM.
